🩸TODAY’S TERROR — THE SELF CHECKOUT ACCUSATION

You’re checking out.
You’re doing great.
Bananas. Beep.
Milk. Beep.
Frozen pizza. Beep.
Look at you. Practically an employee.
Then you scan the avocados.
PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA.
You did.
PLEASE PLACE ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA.
It’s in the bagging area.
You lift the avocado. Put it back down.
UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA.
And suddenly, the relationship has changed.
You’re no longer a valued customer.
You’re a suspect.
A red light begins flashing above your register.
Across the store, an employee looks up.
You immediately start behaving like someone who has absolutely committed a crime.
Should I take my hands out of my pockets?
My hands weren’t in my pockets.
WHY AM I THINKING ABOUT MY HANDS?
The employee arrives.
And you are standing there like The Mummy holding an avocado.
Without saying a word, she taps the screen.
For nine terrifying seconds, all parties investigate whether you attempted to steal $1.29 worth of produce.
Finally, the employee presses APPROVE.
You have been cleared.
You are free to go.
You grab your bags and shamble toward the exit trying to look casual.
Then the receipt checker steps in front of you: “Can I see your receipt?”
Oh, come on!
Today’s Terror: Because in our high tech world, buying groceries has become a horror story.

🩸NEWSWORTHY NUMBER
20
The number of days it reportedly took to shoot John Carpenter's original Halloween (1978).
Twenty days. A shoestring budget of roughly $300,000. And a masked killer who would go on to haunt generations.
Meanwhile, some Hollywood productions spend longer than that deciding which shade of black their villain should wear.
The lesson for horror creators? A memorable monster doesn't require a massive budget. Just a great idea, relentless execution, and maybe a William Shatner mask.
🩸THE ECONOMICS OF SCARING THE CRAP OUT OF YOU

It’s that time of year where many of us visit a haunted attraction and get scared to death. But as reported by our friends at The Hustle, for The Slaughterhous in Des Moines Iowa, there’s a scarier economic proposition. What if no one shows up? “This Airbnb Got A Terrible Review”
Barbarian— Streaming On: Hulu

🩸FINAL SIP
October is the one month when we can watch murder documentaries for breakfast, decorate our homes with human remains, and tell the neighbors we're perfectly normal.
Enjoy it while it lasts. In November, we have to go back to pretending we're well-adjusted.
Stay spooky. Stay suspicious. And never trust a house that's cheaper than it should be 👀
